SCHC Tamil Caregiver Wellness Program |
About this Program

Caregiving takes many forms. Many of us help older, sick, or adult family members and friends with disability. We know that we are helping but many of us don’t attach ourselves to the title of ‘caregiver’. The role of caregiver can often strain one’s health and well-being in many levels, including physical, mental, social and financial. If you are unsure of whether you are a caregiver, here are a few examples of the many different responsibilities a caregiver can assume:
- Providing companionship
- Making regular calls as a security check
- Escorting to programs or services (i.e. wellness groups, exercise classes)
- Making medical appointments or doing reminders
- Talking to the healthcare team to understand what needs to be done
- Purchasing groceries, providing meals or cooking
- Administering medications or doing reminders
Health & Wellness Program:
Focuses on holistic health by providing programs that support physical, mental, social, spiritual and financial well-being of the caregivers; examples: cardiovascular exercise, yoga, health education, diet, art therapy, intergenerational programs etc.
Support Group:
A safe place to meet and connect with other caregivers, learn coping strategies, resources, education, and receive formal and informal support.
Peer-Support Group for Friends and Family Caring for Those with Memory Loss:
A unique group for those caring for friends and family members with memory loss; the group is co-facilitated by a trained professional and a caregiver with lived experience of caring for someone with memory loss. We offer a safe and open environment for participants to share stories and learn techniques for improving quality of life while enhancing knowledge of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.
